Another Desktopx 4 beta has been released.  The standard and the professional version have both gotten the same updates   This build focuses the feedback that has been recieved after the initial release last week.

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give us system information like your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

Was DX 4 the "Vista" of DX,released too soon, badly broken in places and unloved by many?   If so,maybe we can skip it and move right along to DX 5. Hey,it works for M$.

"What would you like to see in DX 4.0?",they ask.

How about........DX 5.0?

Seriously though, how about a little news on the progress of what,in my opinion, is the most useful app SD makes. Please?

My fear is it will just die a slow and painful death.  And i really love Dx and could do so many things.  It could be used to teach school kids programming, it could be used to do sooo many things...

My fear is it will just die a slow and painful death.

I feels the same... It's so sad!

Besides I'm very angry because the truthful information from Stardock about DX development has totally disappeared here.

May be someone know who and how are working on DX now? What is the main goal of this development? And when (the hell!) we will finally receive the corrected update which can be at least installed on the computer for detailed testing?

Well guys, I have to say to those of you who are afraid DX will slowly die. Maybe if Brad saw some more action in the DX galleries, attention would be paid. I know I'm not the best skinner, and I'm definitely not a coder like David, or sViz, martin, Vadm, etc. But I pretty much own the DesktopX theme library. If more of us would start putting out nice, usable skins for DX, it might get more love from Stardock. Besides the fact that I love DX, my mission has been, and will continue to be, to draw attention to DX as one of Stardock's best programs!

If we don't come up with more skinners using it, it may very well die as you say. And I, for one, would be very unhappy for that!!  But there just aren't that many people involved with it. I have no way of knowing how many users there are, but there sure aren't many skinners doing DX these days.

So those of us that want DX to be better, and stay around, let's do something about it. Let's crank up the old DX skinning machines and show Brad and company how much we like DX and that it is definitely second ONLY to Windowblinds.....(oops, did I say that out loud?)  DX is much more than eye candy.

Actually, I see very little to windowblinds that isn't just eye candy. DX can do so much more than just look pretty!

OK, End rant.

Perhaps it will be the christmas gift ?

I remember a few years back when Brad was unhappy because skinners were not using Dx to it's full advantage and he said he wasn't sure if Stardock was even going to continue to develop DesktopX.  Stardock came out with a few updates to DX 3 But they never really added any thing nor did they fix the ongoing problems. If you notice any time Brad talks about all the new updates to the programs and what all will be included in Object Desktop 2010 DX is not mention.

Just about every program has been kept up to date except for DX.  Jim you say we need more people making themes so Brad will take notice. I doubt that he will. Look at how hard RomanDA and sViz worked to make scripts and make tutorials to go along with them to help skinners out. And for a while there were a few skinners making new themes and using the scripts. Did he take notice? Doesn't look like it. Look at all the suggestions that people have given for DX. And "they" asked for the suggestions. What did we get. DX 4 that won't even work.

I hope not but it looks like Stardock could care less if they continue to develop DX

I have been working 99% out of town since the middle of september, and have not had time, energy, or desire to do anything.  The porblem i have is im not an artist, and i usualy wait for someone to suggest something and then try and make it work.  But i agree, DX Gallerys are pretty dead.

As I've said before RedneckDude, your patience with DX is to be commended. I used to be the same way with DX that you are, but maybe if they would make the program more stable and fix all the broken functions of it then more people would use it.

I can't begin to tell you how many days of work I lost with DX because of the crashes. Vista then came along and totally borked the usefullness of some of the nifty information tools in DX. I'd love to get back in to it but it's going to be right or I'm not wasting my time.

My point exactly.

David, I am open to working with you on the graphics end if you wanna do something.

If more of us would start putting out nice, usable skins for DX, it might get more love from Stardock. Besides the fact that I love DX, my mission has been, and will continue to be, to draw attention to DX as one of Stardock's best programs!

This is directly I've tried to do during a several years. However it was not my job. It was only MY HOBBY! As a result I've got some "breadboard model of DX4" which even can't be installed correctly because of a lot of bugs instead of the working version of program I've waited about two years.

No doubt I can make everything if my mood is good and I have enough free time. But now my mood is very and very bad so my free time "to draw attention to DX as one of Stardock's best programs" has ended...

I'm a honest person so I always say that I think. And when I've told hundreds times that I love DX - it was true. But now it's time to stop subservience and hypocrisy and to tell the other words even if these words will be much bitter.

If we don't come up with more skinners using it, it may very well die as you say.

This is not our problem. We paid money to use this software but not for its promoting or advertising because we are not a Stardock workers! We are only the users of Stardock products which should be supported and updated constantly (but much more often than 1 time per 2 years).

Otherwise we must know that Stadock has stopped support and development some of them. And they must talk us about immediately. At least this will be honestly and should relieve us from any vain illusions and unrealizable hopes...

Vad_M, I see your point and agree with most of it, but when I say DX needs to see some skinners putting out some skins, I don't mean the 15 or 20 (and I'm pushing it at that number) skinners who have tried to do something with DX. I mean we need to see some artists/skinners putting out DX themes like they do Windowblinds. We need a large group of skinners putting out quality, resolution independant skins for DX. Not just 10 or 15 people. As far back as I've been a member there have just been a handful of skinners doing DX in any quantity, you being one of the most avid.

And since Stardock has no one putting out DX themes and widgets, other than the MyColors gadgets, DX users aren't what we need. If enough skinners were making DX themes/skins, in quantity and quality, users would follow. If everyone wants to use DX, but no one is skinning it, it hasn't much choice but to fail. I believe, if we skinners make DX something to be sought after, Stardock would follow suit and upkeep the app. Maybe I'm naive.....

Alas, the peak of DX popularity has remained in the faraway past. Seems it happened between 2005 and 2006. WC lost several great authors (like Tiggs, Martin, Will Rose...) which really kept DX on the high level.

The main problem is that development of widgets/gadgets/etc... with DX is not a SIMPLE SKINNING like in WindowBlinds. This is PROGRAMMING first of all. And nobody will not be able to make really perfect things with DX without detailed studing VBScript or Java. This is an axiom which the most of DX skinners/users don't want (or cannot) understand.

So you need spend several years near computer for making and testing hundreds of scripts until you will be ready to use DX. Any other ways are directed to the dead end. Are you really think that people ready for this?

It was a big Stardock's mistake that they allowed several DX authors to leave this place. These people was the base of DX popularity for others. As a result DX lost its leading position on the market. And now this is only a toy (for 10-15 persons) which really could bring millions dollars to Stardock (for its founders)... Yea. It was the global mistake...

Now I'm sobing...
