I ran across a cool little app the other day.  It's nothing fancy but it is useful.  It lets you reboot into a specific OS on shutdown.  Easy-peasy.  Except that Vista UAC hated it.  Wouldn't let it run.

The developers made it work though. They split it into an admin service and an app that calls the service to execute the goal. (Which is how MS intended apps to work so that malicious code can't be executed.) Apparently it was a pain in the ass though.Having read a nu...

How many times have you been at your laptop complaining to yourself about how cramped the keyboard is.  Or at your desk, wishing you had more surface area to work on.  Or bothered by that girlfriend or boyfriend that wouldn't leave you alone.  Or just want to take skinning to the next level?

Designer Erik De Nijs has come to your rescue.

He has designed jeans that have a built in keyboard!

Along with the keyboard you have speakers and a mouse pocket.

So . .if you n...

[Origianlly posted April 4th, 2005]

I was talking last week with some friends about intimacy; how we as a group get together weekly and have been for years and there is still a hesitation to open up and be intimate with the group.

I think that the biggest deterrent that came up was a fear of being judged.

As usual, I have mixed feelings about this.

I think that as responsible people we have an obligation to judge. I think that a fear of being judged poorly is a control in our society...

Ithink that the water at the office should be treated with a blue tint. One that can only be removed with soap. A dye like dentists give kidsto chew after they brushed their teeth. I believe this would cut backon the fallacy of magic water. Magic water is the water that comes outof the sink and kills any germs or bacteria without the use of soap.

I'mamazed how many of my co-workers believe in magic water. And theydisgust me. And those people who are on their way out of the restrooman...

Tom's Hardware Guide (which gave a good review of Sins of a Solar Empire [published by Stardock]) is reporting that those of you with not enough to skin and too much money on your hands can have a new project.

How much money is too much money?  Ebay had one for sale for $2750US.  And what does that get you?  A keyboard that you can skin the keys of.  You can also map them like macros.  It could be THE ULTIMATE GAMING KEYBOARD OF DOOM!!!  (If you pre-ordered you c...

Years ago I wrote an essay on what I believed. years later I submitted it to NPR for their series "This I Believe". Late last year it was picked up by the local NPR affiliate and went live on the air today. My essay's page at KUHF :LinkAaron Klenke has learned to appreciate the little things in life. He manages a software development team with associates working all across the globe. At home, Aaron has a lovely wife, four beautiful daughters and a loyal dog. He admits that most of his days are ...

I just read an article about a suburb of Cleveland OH that has become a ghost town due to all the evictions etcetera in the area. The fact is that people that couldn't afford houses bought houses. Sometimes they lied about jobs or income, sometimes lenders didn't check or didn't care if the borrowers could afford to make payments. In many cases people got variable rate mortgages and got in trouble when (surprise, surprise) the rates went up. Lenders are businesses. Their job is to make money off...

I really love the way that SoundPackager, CursorFX, and WB copies a skin into the appropriate directory when it's executed.  Is this a feature that DeskScapes can do too?

I wanted to take a minute as the subscription drive winds down to look at the last month here at Wincustomize and see what we have.  Because beyond the "perks" of membership and subscription, we have an awesome place to hang out.

We have Island Dog's Weekly lists of great skins we might have missed, and he does the monthly article on dreams.  We've seen him knock out a few tutorials and holiday themed collections.  He and Zoomba and Hank and Jafo have brought us news from aroun...

A while back I suggested trying to start a series where the community could get an idea of what made the Masters amongst us tick; what inspires or motivates them; how do they do what they do. You, the community dove in and sent me piles of questions. I’ve culled through them, chunked them into an order that will allow us to start shallow and get deeper into them as technician, artists, and individuals.

The response from the Masters was also excellent and increased the scope of this project d...

In another thread Alternate Setting made a comment about selling the 'steak' that is WC along with the 'sizzle'.

Today is my 6th year anniversary as a member here at WC.  I'm subscribed for years to come and plan on being around as much as I can.

The "steak" (or tofu in my case) for me really is being a part of something bigger than myself; something great.

Here is where my friends are.
Here is where I make new friends.
Here is where I help strangers.
Here is where I customize...

I follow the tools of the trade in skinning.  I'm hoping that someday skills, money (for said tools), and talent will all at once land in my lap and the visions (not voices) in my head will come out.

It's not likely to happen but if I had the money for it, I think I found the tablet I'd get.

Have you seen the Wacom Cintiq 12WX?

The 12-inch, 16:10 tablet has an LCD monitor underneath apressure-sensitive layer that lets you actually draw right on thescreen. And lest you think the 12W...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away there was a game.  It was called B.U.G.S. (Bill's Unbelievably Ghastly Spaceships) and it was something.  Published by Stardock and creted by Cramon Utilities it was a Galaga-like arcade shooter.

From the game description:
Each decade has brought us new challenges - Flower Power, Punk Rock or designer underwear: We've survived and defeated them all and finally sent them back to where they belong. But now our oddest nightmares are coming tr...
