Another Desktopx 4 beta has been released.  The standard and the professional version have both gotten the same updates   This build focuses the feedback that has been recieved after the initial release last week.

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give us system information like your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

Hey everyone.

Yes . . I have left Stardock.  Don't worry, they and I are still cool, things just didn;'t work out like both they and I wanted.

When I left last month DX was still getting attention.  The goal was to strip it down to bare bones and build it back up into something more useful than it was.  With Brad now focused on the app side of the house instaed of teh game side I'd expect great things.

The lead dev of DX flew to the US in September and Brad, he, and I were all very excited to see DX back in it's glory.  Give it some time.

And . . while I'm not a Stardockian right now ,I'm still around both SD and WC.  It takes more than not paying me to make me go away.

Well, I'm glad you're still around, Zu. That's some good news anyway.

Once I got DesktopX 4.0 installed, and used shexview to remove DesktopX from my context menu, all is well with my DX!! There seems to be a problem with DX being in the context menu? I remove it, all is fine.....hmmmm.....

Well guys, I have to say to those of you who are afraid DX will slowly die. Maybe if Brad saw some more action in the DX galleries, attention would be paid. I know I'm not the best skinner, and I'm definitely not a coder like David, or sViz, martin, Vadm, etc. But I pretty much own the DesktopX theme library. If more of us would start putting out nice, usable skins for DX, it might get more love from Stardock. Besides the fact that I love DX, my mission has been, and will continue to be, to draw attention to DX as one of Stardock's best programs!

If we don't come up with more skinners using it, it may very well die as you say. And I, for one, would be very unhappy for that!!  But there just aren't that many people involved with it. I have no way of knowing how many users there are, but there sure aren't many skinners doing DX these days.

So those of us that want DX to be better, and stay around, let's do something about it. Let's crank up the old DX skinning machines and show Brad and company how much we like DX and that it is definitely second ONLY to Windowblinds.....(oops, did I say that out loud?)  DX is much more than eye candy.

Actually, I see very little to windowblinds that isn't just eye candy. DX can do so much more than just look pretty!

OK, End rant.

Chicken or the egg problem. Personally - I stopped working with DX because the development environment was just too awkward  and there was - is - all these show stopping bugs. How are you suppose to produce work with a bugged tools?

very interesting to hear the lead dev was shipped into the HQ. Was that Alberto Ricco?

So, is this DX4 version - just some premature alpha? That they are just started reworking it?

Same here.  The welcome now loads without the ODZip error. Time for a test drive.

on Dec 17, 2009

The DX Welcome looks for widgets in the new Public Docs location but still looks for themes and objects in Program Files. Is this normal or is there a setting I am missing? Btw,the Welcome now reads DesktopX Professional, which it isn't.

On further testing I have found that the Configure DX Builder dialog looks for themes and objects in the NEW location. To be able to use it and the Welcome all widgets and desktops would need to be in both Public Documents/Stardock/DesktopX and program files. I don't really need or want two copies of everything in these folders.

I can't get DesktopX Pro to install....I get an error telling me it's not compatible with my system!!!?????

yes its working good stuff stardock.

I don't see an update for Pro. Jim, you sure that's not the same update you rolled back from? What's the version # and update date?

on Dec 19, 2009

3.89[b].046   And now it shows installed, but I get that same error when I try to run it from Impulse. And when I run it normally, it isn't Pro and I can't export as a Gadget.

Do you have as well two installation folders (or at least two .exe files) ?

(depending on your answer, perhaps i'll give a try to update to DX4 to see what goes on )

No......

Yeah, the only 3.89[b].046  beta I see is for Standard. I'm not entirely sure why Standard is listed at all, since I don't have that. But at least it works for those who do.
