The new WindowBlinds beta has been released.  This build focuses on working with Windows 7 (and maintaining functionality in Vista and XP).

Known issues:

  • Compact start menus are right out.
  • Paint and Write titlebars are  . . not right.

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give us your WB system information from the WB app, your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

WindowBlinds v6.80.TBD (New BETA Build) 9/21/2009 - Coming MONDAY

  • Windows XP toolbar and animations settings are back under Settings.
  • Windows Vista sidebar skin settings are back under Settings.
  • Windows Explorer backgrounds tab has been added for Windows XP, Vista AND 7.
  • NEW! COOL! Textures tab added!
    • Allows users to apply a textured effect to your skins titlebar, taskbar and startmenu.
    • For skin authors, there are now three new sections in the skin to easily apply a texture to frames, taskbar or the startmenu without worrying about cutting it up and aligning it correctly.
    • Now skins can also include their own textured versions to show in the skin list.
  • Added support for enlarged menus on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Some additional skin sections added for Vista / 7 including a new shadow section.
  • Fixed a bugs where the start button was clipping on multiple monitor Windows 7 boxes.
  • A feature that allows users to drag wallpapers to the large preview area and it will copy them into the wallpapers folder

I have that issue on several skins... no off/restart buttons on the start menu.  This issue does not appear on all skins, but is present on Clear Black by Butch123, Anihilator by Kitty Malone, WaterWalk by Tom Richter and others.  These skins all work correctly in Vista, So I'm assuming it's an issue with the WB7 beta not drawing correctly.

Also, the WB interface is cut off on the right-hand side and I can not access the scroll button to view skins, have to do a manual drag instead.

Other than that, great work Stardock, WB7 with the skins I can use makes the Win 7 GUI more bearable and the OS top notch.

I am sorry to say WindowBlinds 7 will not be supporting Windows XP 64 bit Edition.

It will be supporting Windows XP 32 bit edition (and will probably work on 32 bit Server 2003 too), Windows Vista 32 bit and 64 bit and Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit.

The user base of XP 64 bit is simply too small to justify the additional testing and development costs.

Thank you for your reply, while I can agree that xp x64 may have a smaller userbase, I can't imagine it is that much more so difficult to test on, and is the same codebase as windows server 2003, which isn't going anywhere either.

Anyway, now I know to no longer renew OD (and by assocation not purchase anything on impulse either), so thank you.

Apologies if this appears to be a rant and irrelevant to bug reports, I just want it passed on to whoever cares that such decisions do cost them in other ways than testing and development.

The IE8 tabs will not be skinned, but thats normal for IE8.
Are there plans to make the tabs and toolbars skinnable for IE8?

FYI, I'm using the beta on Vista and have no issues at all.

Edit: I spoke too soon. The IE Tab Close Button is not skinning. Here is my info:

After updating to 7Beta the first blind I tried was OldN'Style and several of the windows were converted to windows classic or XP if you wish. I am running Vista SP2. The sidebar was having it's own problems losing all transparency. Sorry, I uninstalled the update, only problem was it tookWindows Blind 6.4 along with it. $#%& After a few intense moments, including installing the shareware program, everything was working fine. In this last round of updates, My Colors also, ( I lost the Think Green Theme) I am not impressed at all. Luckily I didn't lose any of the master skins I had installed. Has anyone else suffered similar problems?

Just wondering: if because the Win 7 taskbar is yay much wiider than in Vista (and most of the skins were designed for Vista?XP), whether or not that has something to do with some start panels not showing the off/hibernate/restart buttons?

The reason I ask is that these buttons appear on WB skins where the design places them higher on the panel, but not on others where the buttons normally appear at the bottom when applied in Vista/XP.

I prefer the slimline taskbar, as I have Winstep's WorkShelf installed to appear at bottom, so have my icons set to small to have the narrow taskbar.  So I suppose the question is: are the  buttons missing because the narrower taskbar put them off-panel... or has it something to do with Workshelf changing the alignment/position of the startpanel, thus placing the buttons below their usual/normal position and making them invisible/below/underneath WorkShelf and/or the taskbar?

I have tried applying a 'buttonless' WB with the wider taskbar enabled/WorkShelf disabled but the issue remains.... could be I have a bad install or that I need to reinstall with the regular Win 7 superbar and WorkShelf disabled???

I don't believe so Starkers. Vista uses 3 buttons but Win 7 only uses 1. I belive it is scrunching the 3 buttons into 1. Depending on how the buttons were done/set/designed you will get a different result from one skin to another.
